Therefore this is what the Sovereign LORD says: Because it towered on high, lifting its top above the thick foliage, and because it was proud of its height, - Ezekiel 31:10
Today’s Scripture Reading (November 3, 2009): Ezekiel 31
The old saying is that pride goes before the fall. The problem is that when we become too sure of ourselves – there is no need for growth and advancement. So we become all about staying the way we are – and eventually the world passes us. This world is not designed on the idea of stasis. Everything is constantly in a state of flux – it is changing. And it is also advancing.
Albert Einstein was an extremely intelligent man. He made great strides in advancing our knowledge in the area of theoretical physics. And yet, today, a first year university physics student now would know more and understand more about some of the areas that he pioneered than he did. The field has advanced – and it will continue to do so. It is the way this world works.
Pride stops us. We no longer learn, and as a result, we fail. Pride really does go before the fall, because we don’t feel like we need to continue to grow. But the world around us refuses to stop. We are on a journey – and I hope that the journey is going to continue for a long time. But a successful journey requires that we admit that we aren’t already there. There are still things for us to learn. The journey is unfolding before us, it is changing, evolving, shifting. And if we think that we know – or believe that we can’t be any better than we are right now – we will miss the best of the journey that is in front of us.
Don’t stop. The journey is just beginning.
